1975…Here I Come!
By David King

These old photos are of me and my older brother Rob back in 1975 with our dad. We were making homemade bow and arrows while on a family campout. I remember carving sticks with my pocketknife, trying to get them as straight as possible to make a good arrow. We put a notch on the end of the bow and, with a little string, we thought we were pretty cool. We couldn’t hit the side of a barn, but we had fun trying. I am not quite sure what the arrow velocity was, but I am thinking that it was probably around ten feet a second. To think how much better of an archer I would be if I had continued to practice shooting a bow, any bow, since that time on a consistent basis. Currently my archery skills are suspect, using the past few years as a guide, but this issue of Hunting Illustrated will be a great resource for many of us.
We, here at Hunting Illustrated, have received quite a few comments over the years from people who want to see more archery-related content in the magazine. We have consistently featured stories of some of the biggest animals taken by bow hunters, but have lacked some on archery editorial content. We finally decided that we had had enough of that and determined to put something really cool together - like a Bow hunting Special Issue where everything you get is all about archery. Here you go, and I hope you like it. I tried to make sure there was a little bit of everything to make this a very complete issue regarding bow hunting. This issue has archery editorial, as well as how-to articles on bowhunting mule deer, elk, black bear and even coyotes. In addition, we
have articles on bow tuning, shooting and hardcore fitness for you extreme hunters who like to take it to the edge. Of course, you can’t have all of this without throwing in some stories of incredible archery hunts like a Wyoming state record pronghorn, huge Kansas whitetail, monster Nevada 5×5 elk and a massive Alberta muley. To top it off, we have the story on Tim Roberts and his incredible 205 1/8 net typical velvet archery buck from Colorado that is now the biggest archery velvet typical buck in the world. Furthermore, we have plenty of other great features like the Nuge Factor, Mule Deer Watch and much, much more. I enjoyed doing our Corporate Interview with Steven Sims of Limbsaver and talking to him about their exciting news about their new bow they will be releasing later this fall.
Bow hunting has become an incredible force in the hunting industry, and more and more world-class animals keep falling to the broadhead each year. Let me know what you think of this Bow hunting Special Issue, and I will try and work on my form and hope to get my arrows flying faster than they did back in 1975.
